Creating a Distinctive Outdoor Space
There is a lot of work in creating a totally new outdoor space; and unless you are a contractor it may be more than you want to take on. However, if you have an existing patio, balcony or deck you may be able to make some small changes and additions that will give you an outdoor space you will be proud of. Adding some colorful accessories such as an outdoor area rug or some bright throw pillows will do wonders for any drab outdoor space.
If you don not already have patio furniture, this would be a good place to start. Think about the size of the area you want to furnish and what type of furniture you think would be most useful. If you want an area just for breakfast or morning coffee, a simple bistro table and two chairs may do the trick. If you want to entertain and serve dinner outside, a larger dining table and chairs would be a good choice. For relaxing, a comfortable wicker patio set would be a good choice. Whatever type of furniture you choose, make sure it is made of weather resistant material and that it is comfortable; don’t be afraid to try it out in the store, after all you’re the one that will be sitting on it for years to come.
If you already have outdoor furniture, a new coat of paint may make it seem like new. Adding some soft, comfy throw pillows can make hard chairs more comfortable; or adding an umbrella to an existing dining set will provide shade and allow you to use you outdoor area more often. Plants can go a long way in making an outdoor area feel homier; some pretty flowers in pots add color, while some types of herbs help repel insects and add a nice fragrance. Taller plants around the perimeter can create privacy without building a fence. Lighting gives an outdoor area character as well; holiday lights strung in tree branches or on fences make the area seem festive. Candles can create a romantic glow and make the outdoor area seem intimate and cozy. An outdoor rug can add color and warmth while covering up the ugly concrete floor.
There are many things you can do that do not take a lot of time or money to make your outdoor area more special. Think about the little things that make an indoor room feel cozy and incorporate those ideas into your outdoor room. In no time you will have a comfortable place to entertain friends and family; or just a relaxing retreat for yourself at the end of a long day.
